University of Alabama

In 1961, Howard Schnellenberger headed to Tuscaloosa, Ala. To reunite with Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, who Schnellenberger played for at Kentucky.

Schnellenberger coached the ends when he arrived, but quickly rose through the ranks and became the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator.

During Schnellenberger’s tenure at Alabama, the Crimson Tide won three national championships (1961, 1964 and 1965) and established itself as one of college football’s great programs.

In addition to Schnellenberger’s success on the field while at Alabama, he also famously recruited Joe Namath to play for the Crimson Tide in 1961.

Not only did Schnellenberger leave a mark during his tenure at Alabama, but he considered Bryant one of his role models for the remainder of his coaching career.
