1970 was both Shula and Schnellenberger’s first year in Miami and the Dolphins turned around a team which had gone 3-10-1 in 1969 to a 10-4 record. In 1971 the Dolphins won the AFC championship before losing to the Cowboys in the Super Bowl.
In 1972, Schnellenberger was part of history as the Dolphins went 17-0, the last NFL team to go through a regular-season and post-season undefeated. The Dolphins defeated the Redskins 17-0 in the Super Bowl to secure their place in history.
After two years as the head coach of the Baltimore Colts, Schnellenberger returned as the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator from 1975-78.
Just days after Schnelleberger was on the sidelines for his last game, the final game of the 2011 season, he was honored by the Dolphins with a “Lifetime Acheivment Award.”
